Ray De
Vries insists that he isn’t a farmer. His dad,
Ralph was a Dutch immigrant who was used to the old
world organic farming practices. He started Ralph’s
Greenhouse at the same time as the Co-op was
beginning in the Skagit Valley and we were one of
their first accounts. Ralph’s Greenhouse business
grew and grew, becoming the largest supplier of
organic leeks in the nation, and supplier for Amy’s
soups. When Ralph died, Ray stuck with the farm and
together with his right hand man Tim, created an
egalitarian working model, including weekly paid
ESL classes for workers. Whether he calls himself a
farmer or not, Ray is a bedrock farming mentor in
this region.
