Brownfield Orchards began a few generations back, when Mike’s great grandfather started farming land adjacent to their current acreages at the base of Brownfield Canyon above Lake Chelan. Mike’s grandfather Floyd grew apples in Chelan from the 1930s until 1969. Mike’s dad John was uneasy with the toxic chemicals commonly used at the time, and began farming organically well before the state had certification standards, becoming one of the founders of Washington Tilth.

Mike went to college and spent a few years on an organic farm in California before returning to the family farm. Brownfield’s 52 acres of orchards were certified organic in 1987 – becoming the first Washington farm to do so.

Brownfield sells direct to the Co-op and currently works with a diversified acreages of crops, including pears, cherries, table grapes, and their incredible apples, including Gala and Honeycrisp varieties.
