10 Delightful Dark Ales for Winter Cheer

Brighten up the dark days of winter with a pint of our favorite dark ales, now available in the Co-op!

1. Boundary Bay Dark Darkness
This limited release porter is medium-bodied with flavor and aroma of chocolate, toffee, and a roasted malt finish. Cool can art features characters from a quirky web-series produced by local Bellingham artists (go find them on youtube!). 6.3% ABV. 25 IBU.

2. Kulshan Brewing Kitten Mittens
Medium-bodied with balanced bitterness, Kulshan’s winter ale is earthy, fruity, hoppy and chocolaty all in one sip. 7.4% ABV. 39 IBU.

3. Pelican Brewing Bad Santa
Limited release “Cascadian Dark Ale” has a strong roasted malt character balanced with herbaceous hops. 7.5% ABV. 65 IBU.

4. Icicle Brewing Dark Persuasion
Beer for dessert, anyone? Icicle Brewing’s German Chocolate Cake beer is aromatic, smooth, and deeply dark with nuances of chocolate and coconut. 6.5% ABV. 22 IBU.

5. Iron Horse Mocha Death
Iron Horse Brewing took their uniquely delicious flagship beer, Irish Death, and turned up the volume by adding cocoa and espresso. The result is a complex and very delightful dark beer! 7% ABV. 11 IBU.

6. Breakside Salted Caramel Stout
Breakside brews a very limited quantity of this full-bodied stout. Rich, smooth, and toasty-roasty. Great for dessert! 5.5 ABV.

7. Wander Global Mutt Baltic Porter
Using American barley and hops, this beer is brewed in the Baltic tradition and then “Bellingham-ized” with coffee beans and cocoa for a delicious dark porter. 7% ABV. 42 IBU.

8. Founders Breakfast Stout
Brewed with oats, chocolate and a generous dose of java, this stout has an intense coffee aroma and rich, creamy head. However, drinking it for breakfast is not recommended 😊 8.3% ABV. 60 IBU.

9. Reuben’s Robust Porter
Malty and medium-bodied, this porter has a complex aroma – think burnt toast and caramel – and is full of roasted grain flavor. 5.9% ABV. 30 IBU.

10. Silver City Magnificent Bastard Scotch Ale
Fans of “wee heavy” brews will love this unique Scottish-style ale. Aged in Scottish whiskey barrels, this brew is a balance of deep flavors and aromas…peat, toffee, vanilla, floral, and roasted grains. 9.9% ABV.
