Aslan: Brewing Above and Beyond

At Aslan Brewing, being certified organic is just the beginning. This Bellingham-based brew house is a national pioneer in eco-friendly and sustainable efforts. In addition to using 100% USDA certified organic brew ingredients, Aslan participates in programs to offset its environmental impact. Last year they donated 15.5% of profits to local non-profits and community organizations.

In January 2016 Aslan Brewing Company became a Certified B Corporation. In a nutshell, a B Corp inspires businesses to not only to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world. Through a rigorous review and inspection process, B Corps must meet higher standards of social and environmental performance.

Unlike traditional corporations, B Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on workers, community, and the environment. Worldwide there are over 1,500 Certified B Corporations from more than 120 industries with 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.

Sustainability, Clean Energy & Beer

Efficiency is one of the most important elements to sustainability. Whether it’s electricity, natural gas, or water, Aslan Brewing aims to find the best route to conserve the precious resources we all rely upon. LED lighting, Energy Star equipment, and water recycling procedures are just a few of the ways they minimize environmental footprint. To increase refrigeration efficiency, the brewhouse is earth bermed (partially underground) with all walk-in coolers sheltered to keep things as cool as possible.

In order to help offset energy impact, Aslan partners with Arcadia Power. For every kWh of electricity used, Arcadia produces a kWh of clean energy for the grid. The owners also opted for a steam-fired brew house that allows them to recycle the steam expended with every brew.

Aslan is also a Bellingham Downtown Improvement Garden Steward. These gardens help filter out pollutants picked up by storm water runoff, which improves the quality of nearby waterways. Aslan Brewing has been a member of Bellingham’s Sustainable Connections since its early days and take inspiration from Sustainable Connections’ resources on green business.

It’s the (Brew) Water

Aslan Brewing Company is also one of the many Washington State breweries that make up the Brewshed Alliance. As water flows through the land it picks up natural minerals – and pollutants – that give downstream beer a distinct flavor. Aslan joins with Washington Wild’s initiative designed to bring people together with a simple message: protected water makes superior beer.

Raise a glass of Aslan organic beer to growing local jobs, clean energy and sustainable agriculture. The Co-op sells Aslan B15 India Pale Ale and Dawn Patrol Pacific Ale for $11.99 per 6-pk cans; and Aslan Light Lager for $17.99 per 12 pk.
