Skagit Brew Corner: Bahl Hornin’ with Boont

boontbeerIt’s a bustling time of year. Check out the Co-op’s beer selection and you’ll find a host of fabulous new brews to bridge the gap between winter and springtime. Be sure to keep an eye out for a high acclaimed brew from Anderson Valley’s Boont Amber Ale.

Since 1987 the Anderson Valley company has been brewing in Boonville, CA. Settled by Europeans in the early 1850s Boonville is home to a homemade language known as Boontling. Anderson Valley beers all bear the expression: “Bahl Hornin'” which is Boontling for “Good Drinking”. Their excellent amber ale is named for this native language, considered by modern linguists to be one of the world’s most extraordinary examples of homemade language. Still spoken by a handful of residents, Boontling was once taught in the valley’s schools and it was not unusual for outsiders to be dumbfounded by local conversation.
