Skagit Brew Corner: New from Reuben’s Brews

Since opening in August 2012, Reuben’s has won an impressive amount of recognition for their brews including 21 medals at the World Beer Championships and 12 medals at the Washington Brewers Awards.reubporter This family-owned and operated nano brewery in Ballard, Seattle is a recent arrival on the craft brewing scene and has been winning over palates across the country. Available only in small batches, the Co-op now offers two signature beers from Reuben’s: Crikey IPA and Robust Porter — and look for more fresh brew styles available in 2016.

Robust Porter from Reuben’s Brews of Seattle, WA – 5.9% alcohol by volume / 30 IBUs. A multiple award-winner that has most recently earned Gold Medals at the 2015 World Beer Championships and Washington Beer Awards. Classy and dry, this porter beer has flavors of caramel and toasted nuts that lead to complex and flavorful dark roasty flavors and a balanced malty mouth feel. Porters in general are quite cheese friendly, and Reuben’s is no exception. Try pairing this medium-bodied, mahogany-colored ale with a few curdy delights from our Specialty Cheese Island, such as Barbers 1833 Vintage White Cheddar or Willapa Farms Lilly Pad artisan raw cow cheese. Robust Porter will also compliment the reubenscrikeypungent, earthy flavors of a strong blue cheese, whether it be a famous raw French Bleu d’Auvergne (a favorite of chefs everywhere, including the late Julia Child) or Wisconsin Amish’s own applewood smoked Salemville Smokehaus Blue. Pair Robust Porter with roasted vegetables and balsamic vinegar, burgers, and nachos.

Crikey India Pale Ale
from Reuben’s Brews of Seattle, WA – 6.8% alcohol by volume / 53 IBUs – made in a fusion style that blends elements of traditional dry British pale ales and Northwest juicy hoppitude. It pours a slightly hazy, fluffy apricot-colored head full of carbonation and then attacks the palate with tastes of tropical hop and pine needles. Juicy tangerine, grapefruit, and guava flavors emerge against a balanced toasted cracker-like malt backbone. Another award winner, Crikey just took the “Best IPA in the PNW” at the United States Beer Tasting Championship. Pair this golden hued IPA with salty and fried foods, as well as Indian curry dishes, snack mixes, and carrot cake.
