Eating Better on a Budget

Our free outreach program for the community at large, Eat Better on a Budget, is a series of classes that set you up for successful nutrient-rich, low-cost cooking practices, taught by Cooking coordinator Jill Dodge, and Outreach coordinator Jodie Buller.
We host these classes in Co-op Room 309, and encourage groups of friends and neighbors to attend together, to help build food community.

We begin with
At the Store – a practicum and shopping tour full of smart shopping tips on sourcing regionally, seasonally, sustainably, and inexpensively! We cover shopping the bulk section, proper storage, how to find great deals, and help you expand your repertoire of nutrient-dense grains, greens, and proteins.
We’ll send you home with a shopping list template, recipe ideas, and lots of information about how to stretch your grocery dollars to feed your family and friends exciting and nourishing meals.
Many thanks to the folks at Senior Guidebook, who have a number of informational videos on their website which you may choose to enjoy, including this one, featuring us!!! Thanks Jill Dodge for the Good Food commentary.
Cooking coordinator Jill Dodge and Outreach Coordinator Jodie Buller are teaming up to offer some great free classes and demos through our Eating Better on a Budget program. Keep your eyes out for the EBB booklets in-store, by the registers and in the bulk section. Click Here to see the schedule.

The second part of our intro to Eating Better on a Budget, In the Kitchen, will walk you through great ideas for food preparation, storage, and kitchen set up. We’ll talk through meal plans and creative use of leftovers, and prepare a dish in class that demonstrates what’s possible with a little forethought and organization.
Again, we’ll send you home with handouts on storage and recipe ideas that utilize nutrient-rich foods, and how to make the most of them.

Our hand-on educational
Cooking Basics series is a great refresher for even the most expert chefs amongst us, but perfect for people who’d like to expand their skills with foods that are new to them. These classes feature cooking demonstrations and recipe tasting, so bring your appetite!
Cooking Basics in:
1. Grains
2. Greens
3. Beans
4. Grazers
