The Cheese Whisperer: Festive Cheddars

As we hunker down for the winter and holiday season, we find comfort in cheddar. Don’t limit yourself to regular old cheddar – try something new. The Co-op’s Cheese Island currently hosts a number of delightfully flavored cheddars from Britian and America, including the Great Midwest Cheese company’s Cranberry Cheddar, Blueberry Cobbler, Mango Fire (be warned: it’s spicy!) and Apple Cinnamon Cheddar.

Savor these curds cubed on your holiday cheese tray, slice for sandwiches or bake with them. Add Cranberry Cheddar to a Turkey melt sandwich, add Blueberry Cobbler Cheddar to your favorite muffin recipe or try Mango Fire Cheddar on a skewer with some roasted vegetables.

On the British spectrum of cheddar, we carry traditional treats like fluffy Wensleydale cheese with Cranberries, rich, decadent Orange Date White Stilton, and tangy Cotswold Double Gloucester Cheddar with chives and onions. These cheddars are great for snacking or melting on toast. Pair cranberry and blueberry flavored cheddars with crisp, white wines like Pinot Gris or a juicy Riesling. Enjoy the spicy and piquant flavors of Cotswold and Mango Fire Cheddar with an amber ale, thick porter or hoppy India Pale Ale. Savory or sweet, make cheddar your go-to cheese for the holidays.
