In the film, meet three birth caregivers—an obstetrician, a nurse-midwife, and a licensed homebirth midwife—each with a dramatically different idea about what constitutes best care for birthing women. Learn how they see their work and what factors—medical, legal, and cultural—influence women's choices in the birthing room.

Jill Eelkema and her five hens, "the ladies", live near downtown Mount Vernon. Jill grew up with chickens and has been tending her own flock for three years in Skagit. "Not only are these ladies great at composting things you can't put in your compost heap, but they're easier to take care of than my cats - and you can't beat fresh eggs."

Industrial agriculture has denied us over 75 percent of traditional food crops while it drastically changed the genetics of the remainder. But lately heirloom varieties are returning to field and table, especially within the buy-local movement.
Learn how heritage grains are brought back into production after many decades of obscurity, and how that resurgence fits into Pacific Northwest agriculture.
The speaker is René Featherstone, a freelance journalist who’s published over 2000 articles about Inland Northwest farms, foods, rural culture, science and the environment. He’s a partner in Lentz Spelt Farms, the first in the region to establish a spelt seed program, and the first to raise emmer, einkorn, black Nile barley, and culinary camelina seed.

Patricia Herlevi is a music researcher, journalist, instructor, and musician interested in the historical, cultural and traditional aspects of music. She also gives healing music workshops as part of a music consciousness program. She has taught at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op, META Performing Arts, Skagit Valley Community College Community Education, Community Food Co-op, Ayurvedic Health Center, Skagit Hospice, United General Hospital (women’s wellness fair), Academy of Lifelong Learning (WWU), and retirement communities.

With the warmer weather approaching, we start to lighten up on the number of layers we are wearing. This year why not also lighten up on what you eat? We’ll look at smaller portions, going meatless more often, watching your calories in beverages, and increasing your intake of colorful fruits and vegetables. Not only are these foods low in fat, but they also give you lots of disease preventing antioxidants. Try to have as many colors as possible on your plate- green from spinach, orange from sweet potatoes, red from raspberries. As the harvest season ramps up, it’s a great time to try new foods and get as much color as possible into your diet. This way of eating is better for your waistline, and your carbon footprint!

He will discuss the ‘state of the art’ in home energy efficiency, including the cutting-edge concept of “Deep Energy Reduction”, and the potential for 70%-90% reductions in home energy use. He will discuss case studies of homeowners here in Skagit County who are taking the lead and making their homes more energy-efficient. What is the broader meaning of their experiences? What are the (sometimes counterintuitive) nuts and bolts of saving energy in the home? How easy is it to reduce your home energy use by half? Join us for a lively, participatory discussion about energy – what makes our society go. We’ll shine a spotlight on important problems we face—and how to solve them. Steven Hoffman, Ph.D., is Executive Director of the NW Center for Sustainability and Innovation (NWCSI), a Skagit-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. With over 20 years of environmental research and consulting experience, Steve recently co-founded a nonprofit organization devoted to education about (and implementation of) leading-edge innovations in sustainability. NWCSI is deeply concerned with how we can attain a sustainable energy future.

Infant Massage will help your baby discharge stress, calm your baby, and help your baby to sleep better! Come learn a fun way to interact with your baby and increase their health!
Dianna Mincin is a Licensed Practical Nurse and has worked with families for the past 20 years. Certified in Infant Massage, B.A.B.Y. reading program and Happiest Baby on the Block, Dianna brings to her work a broad scope of knowledge regarding the needs of infants and parents.

$10 Co-op Members, $20 General PublicCuban cuisine has been influenced by Spanish, French, African, Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese cultures and in the class we will be tasting and smelling the spices and foods of the Cuban culture. Come find out what sofrito is and how to use it! We will be feasting on Cuban Style Picadillo and of course the staple dish, Arroz con Pollo.
This class costs $10 for co-op member owners and $20 for the general public.

Discover how easy it is to make your own nutritious baby foods in this 2 hour discussion and hands-on demonstration. Making baby food is fun and simple! She’ll bring a copy of the perennial favorite Feed Me! I’m Yours!, as well as a baby food mill.
Topics covered: How will I know when my baby is ready? * How should I introduce solid food? * How will I know when my baby is full? * Do I still need to give my baby breast milk or formula? *How should I introduce other solid food? * How many times a day should my baby be eating solid food? * Do I need any special equipment? * Where should I feed my baby? *How can I help my child develop healthy eating habits?
Dianna Mincin, a graduate of Bastyr University in Nutrition, has been helping to improve the health of mothers and infants for over 20 years. She also is a licensed nurse, childbirth educator and birth doula.
